The Ohta FK9 higonokami pocket knife was designed and made by hand by Hiroaki Ohta. The design of this Japanese knife maker looks a lot like that of the famous Higonokami knives. Strictly speaking it isn’t a Higonokami knife because only one producer can use the term Higonokami.
The ‘reverse tanto’ blade is made from D2 steel and is enhanced with a fall-flat grind. The blade has two colours, matt black and metal colour. These colours are not only nicely in contrast, the matt black finish protects the steel from corrosion.
You open the blade by pushing the latch at the front of the knife, when closed, towards to the spine of the handle. To make sure the knife doesn’t close as you use it you continue to press the latch with your thumb. To close the knife you use your hand to push the blade back in. Because the knife doesn’t contain a lock it adheres to the local laws and regulations with regards to carrying folding knives in many countries.
## Higonokami’s
The first Higonokami’s were produced by blacksmiths who also made samurai swords. These blacksmiths were forced to find another way to make money as the samurai were no longer necessary.
The perfect simplicity and functionality turned this into a very popular knife shape. For a while they seemed to be forgotten, but Higonokami knives are back! New materials and variations truly brought these knives back to life.
## Cherry wood (Sakura)
In Japanese culture the cherry blossom has a special status. Cherry blossoms are often seen as a metaphor for life. A handle made from cherrywood will therefore have a special meaning for some. These knives are made from one piece of cherrywood.
Please note: this is a natural product. Each knife is unique and the pattern of the wood may vary.
