The Gerber Principle Black Bushcraft 30-001659 is a cool bushcraft knife. When developing the Principle Gerber truly did its homework. They carefully considered the needs of both amateur and expert bushcraft enthusiasts, making the Principle the perfect knife for actually every user.
The basis of a bushcraft knife is the handle. That is why Gerber enhanced the Principle with a ‘Triple Grip Ergonomics’ system. This means that the Principle was optimized for the three basic grips when bushcrafting: The ‘baseball grip’. The precision grip and the ‘chest lever’.
## Handle options for the Gerber Principle
For the hammer grip you close your hand tightly around the handle as if you are holding a hammer. With it you do most of the work. The handle of the Principle is constructed as such that it nicely fills your hand for a comfortable grip. The next grip is the precision grip. You place your thumb on the first hollow pin in the handle and place your index finger on the spine of the blade. Because of the hollow pin you instinctively know where your thumb belongs. The final grip is the ‘chest lever’ grip. For this grip you hold the knife in a reversed hammer grip. So with the pommel against your chest and the edge pointed towards your elbow. With the Principle you also place your thumb on the hollow pin in this ‘reversed way’. You notice that the ergonomics were carefully thought through. You can find more information about bushcraft cutting techniques in our article on Basic Knife Safety.
## Gerber Principle blade
A handle alone won’t do you much good. Fortunately, the blade was also carefully designed. The spine of the blade was, for instance, sanded at a 90-degree angle to make sure it stays sharp enough to scrape a firesteel or to make a fire. The edge is enhanced with a sharp scandi-grind. It has a zero-grind, so doesn’t contain a ‘micro-bevel’. The end, however, is polished for additional sharpness. The scandi edge can also easily be sharpened in the field with only limited means. The blade is made from 420HC. This is a tough, stainless type of steel that is easy to sharpen.
## Sheath for the Gerber Principle
There are many ways of carrying a fixed knife. Vertically on your belt. Horizontally on your belt. With a MOLLE-system. The Gerber Principle can do it all! The knife comes with a basic sheath and different carrying options.
All in all the Gerber Principle is a versatile bushcraft knife that adheres to many demands from many different users. Made in the United States, for an amazing price.
